Hifiman Sundara
The Hifiman Sundara Closed-Back brings the iconic Sundara name to the world of closed-back headphones, but don’t let the familiar design fool you—this is a very different headphone!
Build and Comfort
Featuring elegant beach-wood earcups that feel very polished they’re almost too smooth to believe, the Sundara Closed-Back makes a strong first impression. The suspension headband offers good comfort, though it inherits the same paint-wear issue on the adjustment mechanism as its open-back sibling.
The medium-to-high clamp force feels snug but not overbearing, and the hybrid pads (eco-leather outer layer and mesh inner) provide a decent fit despite the limited cup swivel.
Audio Quality
Closed-back headphones are tricky to get right, and the Sundara Closed-Back doesn’t quite hit the heights of its open-back counterpart. While the treble delivers clarity and avoids harshness, it occasionally feels slightly unnatural or plasticky. The tuning leans mid-forward with a bump in the mid-bass, offering a pleasing punch and slam. Male vocals are a standout, but bright female vocals can sound a bit thin and shouty.
The soundstage is solid for a closed-back, with good depth, imaging, and separation, though it understandably feels more “in your head” compared to the expansive Sundara Open-Back or Edition XS. Bass is strong for the category, making this a great option for those who value isolation without sacrificing punch.
Amplification
At 98dB sensitivity and 20 Ohms, the Sundara Closed-Back isn’t that hard to drive. While it’ll work with most devices, pairing it with an amp is recommended to get the best performance. You don’t need anything fancy, but a little extra power goes a long way.
Price
The price of these is about 129~ €~.
Conclusion
If you need a closed-back headphone for a noisy environment or shared spaces, the Sundara Closed-Back offers good detail retrieval, isolation, and a solid bass performance—all at a now-attractive price point of around €129 + -. However, if open-back headphones are an option, the Sundara Open-Back remains the clear winner in terms of overall sound quality.
Verdict: A respectable closed-back option with trade-offs—ideal for specific use cases but not a replacement for the Sundara Open-Back.
